The interesting interplay of light and shadow at the Cox & Rizzetti foundry made it a fascinating subject for Tony Irving. “It was straight out of Dickens” with men working, stripped to the waist, sweating and shovelling. The factory at 80-90 Johnston Street Collingwood which manufactured iron garden furniture, gates and balustrades closed in 2002 after 60 years of operation.

Tony Irving studied at the National Gallery School (now VCA), RMIT, Swinburne and Ruskin College, Oxford. He has been exhibiting his sensitive realist artworks regularly since the mid 1960's. In 1966 he won the prestigious National Gallery of Victoria’s John McCaughey Prize. His works are held in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia, the National Gallery of Victoria and several regional galleries.
