In his works Tony Irving is always telling a story and weaves together a narrative that hints at more that is evident at the surface. His great skill is the ability to meld the classical styles of the masters he admires – Vermeer, Rembrandt and others – with his own entirely contemporary capturing of scenes and highly individual vision. His mastery of light ads to a sense of quiet drama, and lifts scenes from works of mere realist documentary to those of true engagement between the artist, his subject and the viewer.
