In August 2004, Jeffrey Makin travelled to the country around Calstock, Ben Lomond in Northern Tasmania, a place made famous by the painting of John Glover in the 1840’s.  It is a landscape bathed in golden light that moves from a pastoral arcadia to the reverence of gothic mountains. His Tasmanian vision is one of abounding light, swirling clouds, rain storms and farm land. Providing a contemporary link to the foundations of non-indigenous culture in Australia, Makin’s The Tasman series references with all passion the essence of this tradition. Ralph Hobbs

Jeffrey Makin was born in Wagga Wagga, NSW. In 1966 Makin completed a Diploma in Painting at the National Art School, Sydney. After graduating, he held his first exhibition at the Watters Gallery and received the Rockdale and Drummoyne Prizes. His development as an artist was inspired by various techniques, including traditional landscapes, modernism, impressionism and abstraction.

Makin is represented in all Australian national, state and most regional collections. These include the NGA, NGV, AGNSW, QAG, AGWA and Parliament House. In 2007 a boutique hotel in East Melbourne was named in his honour.
