Jan Senburgs is ‘one of Australia’s most distinctive and individual practitioners,’ and a ‘gutsy, figurative expressionist and socially committed humanist’. Going South is typical of his work - depicting a container ship as a huge floating sculpture and somewhat at odds with the vast Southern Ocean it is navigating. This important etching was part of a small edition of 20. The National Gallery of Australia purchased the second proof copy of the edition validating the value of this work.
Jan Senbergs has been the recipient of numerous awards and prizes, including the Dobell Prize from the Art Gallery of NSW in 1995. He received an Honorary Award in the Doctor of Arts from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and was the recipient of the Helena Rubenstein Travelling Art Scholarship in 1966.
Senbergs' work is featured in prominent galleries and museums across Australia and overseas. He is featured in the National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria, Art Gallery of NSW, Art Gallery of SA and Art Gallery of WA. Internationally, Senbergs is included in the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
