Knight of Hahndorf is a very good example of Ernest Walter Smith's work with its expressive and romantic/surrealist theme. It has a great mid-century colour palate and skilled composition which continues to interest.
Ernest Walter Smith was born in Melbourne in 1928 and studied art in Sydney, Melbourne and overseas in Italy and the USA. A painter, gallery director and critic, he was art critic for Adelaide's 'Sunday Mail' and also lectured in art history in several overseas universities.
