Elaine Haxton was born in Melbourne and grew up in Sydney. Leaving school at fourteen, she studied at the East Sydney Technical School and the Grosvenor School of Art, London.
Haxton travelled throughout her life, studying in Japan., Paris and New York. A prolific designer, she worked on murals, textiles, stage sets and costumes, as well as painting and printmaking. In 1943 she won the Sulman Prize for her mural at the Coq d’Or restaurant in Sydney’s Kings Cross. In 1986 Haxton was made a Member of the Order of Australia for "services to the arts, particularly printmaking".
Haxton’s work can be found in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia, all state and most regional galleries and universities.
